Joyce Culpeper is a very mysterious woman since not much is known about her. For this illustration I used the portrait of Catherine Howard, a sketch of an unknown woman whom I strongly believe is Catherine’s sister by Hans Holbein and a brass rubbing of her grandmother, Elizabeth Ferrers.
Joyce was born in Oxenhoath, Kent, the first child of Sir Richard Culpeper of Oxen Hoath and his second wife Isabel Worsley. She had a younger sister called Margaret (c.1481) and a younger brother Thomas (1484 - 1492). Her father died in 1484 and her mother married again to John Legh of Stockwell. Born into the Culpeper family, she married into the Howard family, one of the most prominent families in Tudor England, thus intertwining her life with significant historical events of the time.
When Joyce Culpeper was born about 1445, in England, her father, Sir John Culpeper, was 22 and her mother, Lady Agnes Gaynsford, was 21. She married Gervase Horne about 1466, in England, United Kingdom. She died in 1523, at the age of 79.
