Josiah Charles Trent (August 7, 1914 – December 10, 1948) was an American surgeon and a historian of medicine. He is notable for his collection of rare books and manuscripts documenting the history of western medicine.

14 de mai. de 2024 · In 1956, the Trent Room was constructed to honor Dr. Josiah Charles Trent (1914–1948) and the donation of his remarkable historical medical collection by his wife Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans (1920–2012).
He was the youngest of four children born to Josiah Charles and Mary Simpson Trent. Physician and friend, John F. Fulton wrote in Dr. Trent’s obituary that “Trent proved a precocious student, graduating from high school with honors at the age of sixteen.”

Josiah Charles Trent (1914-1948) was an American thoracic surgeon and rare book and manuscript collector. This collection primarily documents his medical education and training apart from his career at Duke University Hospital, as well his collecting activities, through his coursework, subject files, and writings.
As Duke University celebrates its centennial, this exhibit highlights the life of Dr. Josiah Charles Trent and the Trent Collection, recognizing this cornerstone of our History of Medicine Collections. This exhibit was curated by Rachel Ingold, Curator of the History of Medicine Collections.
The Trent Collection in the history of medicine includes remarkable and unique materials. Dr. Trent collected 4,000 rare books, numerous medical manuscripts, and medical instruments.
