John Stuart Mill (20 May 1806 – 7 May 1873) was an English philosopher, political economist, politician and civil servant. One of the most influential thinkers in the history of classical liberalism , he contributed widely to social theory , political theory , and political economy.
Obras. A obra mais famosa de J. S. Mill foi Sistema de Lógica Dedutiva e Indutiva (1843) e o ensaio Sobre a Liberdade (1859). O Sistema de Lógica foi um sucesso imediato, passou por oito edições durante a vida de Mill e permaneceu um best-seller ao longo do século XIX.
Filosofia e Política. Mill era um empirista que procurava estender o conhecimento baseado na experiência em domínios sociais e morais. Sua política era uma tentativa apaixonada de colocar sua filosofia em prática. Sua sistematização juvenil da filosofia de Bentham acabou sendo publicada como Utilitarismo em 1863.
