He was notably Home Secretary in 1834 and served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland between 1846 and 1847, the first years of the Great Famine .

Ponsonby, John (1713–87), politician, was born on 29 March 1713, the second son of Brabazon Ponsonby (qv) (1679–1758), 2nd Viscount Duncannon and 1st earl of Bessborough, and Sarah Colvill (née Margetson; d. 1733).
