  4. John MacBride was a republican leader and soldier who fought in the Boer war and the 1916 Easter Rising. He was born in 1865 in Westport, Co. Mayo, and died in 1916 in Dublin. He married Maud Gonne, a leading Irish nationalist, in 1903, but their marriage was brief and tumultuous. He was executed by the British after the Easter Rising.
