27 de out. de 2023 · John André (2 May 1750/1751 – 2 October 1780) was a major in the British Army and head of its Secret Service in America during the American Revolutionary War. He was hanged as a spy by the Continental Army for assisting Benedict Arnold 's attempted surrender of the fort at West Point, New York, to the British.
Major John André Monument, also known as the Site of Major John André 's Hanging and Burial, is a historic monument located at Tappan in Rockland County, New York; it's only a few yards away from the New Jersey border. It is a gray granite monument erected in 1879 and approximately 40 inches square and 58 inches tall.

John André through his correspondence, which was often aided by Peggy Shippen - a Loyalist and wife of Arnold, persuaded Arnold to surrender the fort for £20,000. The deal would allow the British to separate out New England from the dissident colonies.
