26 de out. de 2010 · Joe and I discussed it and we are on the same page now. The nuance between to and with are minimal at best. Context, of course, is everything. To give someone a talking to does indeed imply a scolding or lecture. It just depends on the context and how it is stated, if it is verbal communication.

15 de set. de 2013 · Joe refuses to answer the questions. In English, the verbal construction "answer to" is used in a very particular way. If I say, "I answer to Joe, not to you," that could mean Joe is my boss and I might do what he says, but I won't do what you say. You sometimes hear the sentence "I answer to a higher power."
9 de ago. de 2006 · -Joe P.D. No usamos "vacations" como los hispanoparlantes (plural) en este caso. Solo usariamos con algo asi como : "We take three vacations each year"/"We like taking vacations"/"My family took me on many vacations as a child" etc. J

10 de jun. de 2011 · I think that "could" has the meaning of "ability". If I say "I would appreciate it if you could turn it down", it would imply that "if you are able to turn it down".

15 de mai. de 2007 · I agree with Joe Public's examples. Of your choices, the one that is just plain wrong here is in. Spatially, in would be inside. Something could be printed in a box on the page, but not in the page. The page is one of many pages in the book. On is upon, that is, touching the face of the page.
