James Stanhope, 1st Earl Stanhope PC (c. 1673 – 5 February 1721) was a British Army officer, politician, diplomat and peer who effectively served as Chief Minister between 1717 and 1721. He was also the last Chancellor of the Exchequer to sit in the House of Lords .

Stanhope came to prominence in the War of the Spanish Succession [1] where he was largely responsible for the campaign of 1710, including the disaster at Brihuega [2], where he was captured.
James Richard Stanhope entered the House of Lords as the 7th Earl Stanhope upon his father’s death in 1905. He fought with the Grenadier Guards in the Boer War and the First World War; during the latter he was awarded the DSO and the MC.

As early as November 1709 Shaftesbury was wishing Stanhope at home, and James Craggs II* informed Stanhope that the ministry would be attacked over the failure of its Spanish policy ‘and are persuaded you are the properest person to justify them and put ’em in a good light’.
