James McHenry was a Scotch-Irish American military surgeon, statesman, and a Founding Father of the United States. He served as Secretary of War under George Washington and John Adams, and was a signer of the Constitution and a delegate to the Maryland State Convention.

McHenry accepted and served both Presidents Washington and John Adams before resigning in 1800. Following his resignation, McHenry retired from politics and returned to Maryland, dying in Baltimore on May 3, 1816.

James McHenry emigrated from Ireland to the American colonies in 1771. He studied medicine with Dr. Benjamin Rush in Philadelphia and immediately volunteered as an Army surgeon when the Revolutionary War began.
