James McHenry (November 16, 1753 – May 3, 1816) was a Scotch-Irish American military surgeon, statesman, and a Founding Father of the United States. McHenry was a signer of the United States Constitution from Maryland, initiated the recommendation for Congress to form the Navy, and was the eponym of Fort McHenry.

12 de nov. de 2020 · James McHenry was only 1 of 5 physicians with about 2000 soldiers that were captured and was later paroled to his house awaiting prisoner-of-war exchange. McHenry rejoined the Continental Army in 1778 at Valley Forge.
McHenry accepted and served both Presidents Washington and John Adams before resigning in 1800. Following his resignation, McHenry retired from politics and returned to Maryland, dying in Baltimore on May 3, 1816.
President George Washington tapped James McHenry for the position of Secretary of War, in late January 1796, 19 after three others had declined. McHenry remained in the cabinet of John Adams when he became President a year later.
A Biography of James McHenry. McHenry was born at Ballymena, County Antrim, Ireland, in 1753. He enjoyed a classical education at Dublin, and emigrated to Philadelphia in 1771. The following year, the rest of his family came to the colonies, and his brother and father established an import business at Baltimore.
