James Alexander Hamilton (April 14, 1788 – September 24, 1878) was an American soldier, acting Secretary of State, and the third son of Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He entered politics as a Democrat and supporter of Andrew Jackson.

James Alexander Hamilton was an American lawyer and the fourth child of Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He served as a lawyer, a U.S. Attorney, and a Secretary of State, and supported Andrew Jackson in opposing the Second Bank of the United States. He married Mary Morris and had six children, including Alexander Hamilton Jr., who became a Secretary of the United States Legation at Madrid.
