From the moment of his birth James was Duke of Rothesay and heir apparent to the Scottish throne. When James V King of Scotland was born on 10 April 1512, in Linlithgow, Linlithgowshire, Scotland, his father, James IV King of Scotland, was 39 and his mother, Margaret Tudor Queen Consort of Scotland, was 22. He married Madeleine of Valois on 1 January 1537, in Notre-Dame, Le Havre, Normandy, France. He registered for military service in 1542.
