James, Duke of Rothesay was born in St Andrews on 22 May 1540. As James V's first legitimate child and the heir to the throne, he automatically became Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland. The baby prince was baptised in a lavish ceremony in St Andrews on 26 May.
Arthur Stewart, Duke of Rothesay (20 October 1509, Holyrood Palace - 14 July 1510, Edinburgh Castle) was the second son of James IV of Scotland and Margaret Tudor, and had he outlived his father, James IV of Scotland would have been King of Scotland, he was named after his uncle Arthur, Prince of Wales, who like his namesake had he outlived his father, would have been King of England.

Prince James, Duke of Rothesay was the first son of James V, King of Scotland and Mary of Guise. He died in infancy and his brother also died within a few days of his death. The crown was supposed to be passed onto him and then his brother but because of their deaths, the crown went to their sister, Princess Mary.
