13 de mai. de 2023 · James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormonde KG, PC (19 October 1610 – 21 July 1688) was an Anglo-Irish statesman and soldier, known as Earl of Ormonde from 1634 to 1642 and Marquess of Ormonde from 1642 to 1661. Following the failure of the senior line of the Butler family, he was the second of the Kilcash branch to inherit the earldom.

James Butler married his cousin Elizabeth Preston, Baroness Dingwall suo jure (in her own right). They had five sons and three daughters, 5 of which survived to adulthood.

Há 3 dias · Soldier. James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormond, and several members of his family, are buried in a large vault (22 feet long) at the east end of Henry VII's chapel in Westminster Abbey. The vault was formerly the burial place of Oliver Cromwell and members of his family and officers until their bodies were ejected in 1661.
Richard Butler of Kilcash (1615–1701) was an Irish soldier and landowner, the third son of Thomas Butler, Viscount Thurles and brother of James, 1st Duke of Ormonde. He sided with the Irish Confederacy at the Irish Rebellion of 1641. He scouted the enemy on the morning of the Battle of Cloughleagh.
