Ormonde, James Butler, 12th earl and 1st duke of ôrˈmənd , 1610–88, Irish statesman, most powerful royalist influence in Ireland during the English civil war. A ward of the crown after the death (1619) of his father, Viscount Thurles, he was brought up a Protestant and in 1629 he married the heiress of the earl of Desmond.

He was the son of Sir Edmond Butler and Lady Joan FitzGerald, and married in 1327, Lady Eleanor de Bohun, daughter of Humphrey de Bohun, 4th Earl of Hereford by his spouse Elizabeth Plantagenet, daughter of King Edward I of England.
Daughter of Henry, 1st Duke of Beaufort and wife of James Butler, 2nd Duke of Ormonde. She married James, then Lord Ossory in 1685 as his second wife. They had one son and five daughters. Only two daughters survived infancy: Lady Elizabeth, unmarried (d.1750) and Lady Mary (d.1713) who married John, Lord Ashburnham in 1710.
