Horatio Seymour (May 31, 1810 – February 12, 1886) was an American politician. He served as Governor of New York from 1853 to 1854 and from 1863 to 1864. He was the Democratic Party nominee for president in the 1868 United States presidential election , losing to Republican Ulysses S. Grant .

He then served as military secretary to Governor William L. Marcy (1833–39), was a member of the New York Assembly (1842–46), and was elected mayor.

In the U.S. presidential election on November 3, 1868, Ulysses S. Grant defeated Horatio Seymour in the popular vote by a 53% to 47% margin and in the electoral vote by a margin of 214 to 80. [1] 78% of the American electorate participated in this election – including 500,000 African-American men who voted for the first time in this election. [1]
