Since its inception in September 1979, the Intercontinental Championship has been held by WWE's greatest Superstars, including WWE Hall of Famer Pat Patterson, The Rock, Ultimate Warrior, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Bret "Hit Man" Hart, Shawn Michaels and Triple H.
In 1985, the championship belt design changed, the centerplate now centered on the Atlantic Ocean, in a map including western Africa and Europe. On April 7, 1989, the championship was first defended outside of North America, by Rick Rude against The Ultimate Warrior in Turin, Italy. [5]
The WWE Intercontinental Championship is a professional wrestling championship contested in and owned by the American promotion WWE on the Raw brand. The title was introduced into the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) in 1979.
