Hildegarde Hawthorne is the daughter of Julian Hawthorne and granddaughter of Nathaniel and Sophia Hawthorne. She wrote at least 26 books ranging from biographies to travel narratives. Hildegarde's began selling articles to St. Nicholas Magazine at 16 years old.

U.S. poet and author Hildegarde Hawthorne was the granddaughter of the celebrated writer Nathaniel Hawthorne and the daughter of Julian Hawthorne, also a writer. Her books for children, which she considered her chief work, were sometimes based on reminiscences of her father.
Hildegarde Hawthorne (1871-1952) was a biographer of several eminent American men of letters including her grandfather, the novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne. She also wrote fantasy fiction and poetry. George Moore enjoyed affectionate correspondence with her for years.
