The only daughter of an impoverished Welsh family, she received an excellent education “although Education was a Word then unknown, as applied to Females” ( Thraliana ).

  3. Hester Thrale, a British traveller and writer, visited the Palace of Versailles in 1775 and wrote a letter to her friend Dr Johnson about her impressions.
