Herbert Marcuse (/ m ɑːr ˈ k uː z ə /; German: [maʁˈkuːzə]; July 19, 1898 – July 29, 1979) was a German-American philosopher, social critic, and political theorist, associated with the Frankfurt School of critical theory.

The Frankfurt School was formed in 1922 but went into exile in the United States in the early 1930s during the reign of the Third Reich.

Estudou literatura e filosofia em Berlim e Freiburg, onde conheceu filósofos como Martin Heidegger, um dos maiores pensadores alemães na época. Aos 24 anos, ele voltou à cidade natal, onde trabalhou na venda de livros.
A autora busca os fundamentos epistemológicos que nortearam as reflexões de Arendt e Marcuse sobre contestação estudantil nos anos 1960 – resgatando, neste percurso, o pensamento de Tocqueville, Hegel e Marx –, e detalha os posicionamentos teóricos e políticos dos dois pensadores.
