Henry John Temple was born in Westminster in 1784. He succeeded his father’s Irish peerage in 1802, which did not allow him a place in the House of Lords but did bestow both a vast County Sligo estate and the title Lord Palmerston, by which he became known.

Viscount Palmerston was a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created on 12 March 1723 for Henry Temple, who subsequently represented East Grinstead, Bossiney and Weobley in the British House of Commons. He was made Baron Temple, of Mount Temple in the County of Sligo, at the same time, also in the Peerage of Ireland.
Palmerston died aged 84 on 10 June 1757. He had two children by his first wife, neither of whom survived him.: Henry Temple, Lord Temple of Mount Temple (died 18 August 1740) Richard Temple (c.1726 – 8 August 1749) He had no children by his second wife Isabella, who died on 11 August 1762 at North End, Hammersmith.
