Havre de Grace (/ h æ v ər d ɪ ˈ ɡ r eɪ s /), abbreviated HdG, is a city in Harford County, Maryland, United States. It is situated at the mouth of the Susquehanna River and the head of Chesapeake Bay. It is named after the port city of Le Havre, France, which in full was once Le Havre de Grâce (French, "Harbor of Grace").
Havre de Grace is a small city of approximately 15,000 residents (2020) in northeastern Maryland. Named by General Lafayette, it was attacked by the Royal Navy during the War of 1812. During the 19th century, Havre de Grace was a bustling river port on the Susquehanna and boasts today many marinas and historic homes.
Havre de Grace (May 12, 2007 – April 30, 2023) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who was bred in Kentucky and was 2011 American Horse of the Year. During her racing career, she was owned by Fox Hill Farms and trained by J. Larry Jones. Her sire was the 2005 American Horse of the Year, Saint Liam.
The city was originally named Franciscopolis after the king, and was subsequently renamed Le Havre-de-Grâce ("Harbour of Grace") after an existing chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce ("our Lady of Grace"). The name of the American city of Havre de Grace, Maryland, is inspired by this name.
The Raid on Havre de Grace was a seaborne raid that took place on 3 May 1813 during the broader War of 1812. A squadron of the British Royal Navy under Rear Admiral George Cockburn attacked the town of Havre de Grace, Maryland, at the mouth of the Susquehanna River.
Concord Point Light is a 36-foot (11 m) lighthouse in Havre de Grace, Maryland. It overlooks the point where Susquehanna River flows into the Chesapeake Bay, an area of increasing navigational traffic when it was constructed in 1827.
