Sir Harold George Nicolson, geboren 1886 in Teheran, war der jüngere Sohn des Diplomaten Arthur Nicolson. Er besuchte das Balliol College in Oxford, trat selbst 1909 in den diplomatischen Dienst ein und bekleidete verschiedene Posten in Konstantinopel, Teheran und Berlin.
