27 de jul. de 2007 · I believe that "goodbye" is used far more often than "farewell" which sounds to my ears much more formal. (I used to quote Google hits to determine if a word was used more often but I have come to believe that those numbers are not reliable indicators of usage.) From informal to more formal: bye-bye, goodbye, farewell (to my ears at any rate).
10 de mai. de 2006 · A question that comes to my mind now is that it is possible to spell it like "good-bye" or "goodbye". The hyphen is there for a reason. I think that this word has a history and when they made the word an official word it took on these two forms. If you can say it you can spell it.

It sounds like a slight warning: Until then (next time), I'll be watching you, you're on probation, etc. To mean "bye" it should immediately follow a date or time, like this: Bob: Next time, don't miss your target. Our next meeting is on Tuesday at 10 AM. Until then... (mean "until the meeting") Carla: Goodbye, Bob.
26 de abr. de 2008 · "Se despiden" has both meanings: "They say goodbye to each other" or "they say goodbye to other people". The context or the whole sentence will be enough to make it clear, but you can add "el uno del otro" or "uno de otro" if you´re not sure
10 de dez. de 2018 · It is hard to say goodbye... indicates just this time, or to this person. It is hard saying goodbye... sounds like there's a deformity in someone's mouth and that makes it difficult for them to say the word 'goodbye' forever. In the sample sentence you've quoted there, I think you could use either construction.

Perhaps something you'd say to yourself just after someone's death. "Goodbye dear friend. May you rest in peace." Goodbye in English doesn't necessarily mean forever, of course.
22 de jun. de 2021 · I'm making a translation, and here in Brasil, in cellphone conversation or skype conversation, we might say "send you a kiss" when we are saying goodbye. I need to translate this to English, I mean when the guy is saying goodbye and he says in Portuguese "A kiss for you".
