Virginia delegates George Wythe and Richard Henry Lee signed later in the fall. Elbridge Gerry and Oliver Wolcott signed later, as well.
READ, GEORGE. (1733–1798). Lawyer, Signer, acting president of Delaware. Born in Cecil County, Maryland, on 18 September 1733, Read studied law in Philadelphia; was admitted to the bar in 1753; and settled in New Castle, Delaware. In 1763 he was elected attorney general of Delaware, holding this post for the next decade.

He was born in the colony of Maryland, but this would be short-lived as his parents moved to New Castle County, Delaware. It would be here where Read would serve his country so passionately. He was educated by Reverand Francis Allison in Pennsylvania.
