Sir George Paget Thomson was born in 1892 in Cambridge, England, the son of Sir J. J. Thomson who was primarily responsible for the discovery of the electron. Thomson served as an undergraduate at Trinity College, Cambridge, studying mathematics followed by physics, and had done a year's research under his father when World War I began.

Sir George Paget Thomson was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1937 with Clinton Davisson, "for their experimental discovery of the diffraction of electrons by crystals." Throughout his career, he held positions at Cavendish Laboratory, University of Aberdeen, Imperial College, and Corpus Christi College.
