George Monck was the English general who restored Britain's parliament in the spring of 1660, bringing to a close nearly two decades of bitter civil war and religious strife. Then, under Monck's leadership, parliament enacted the restoration of the British monarchy, which had been suspended since the execution of King Charles I eleven years earlier.
George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle, lived from 6 December 1608 to 3 January 1670. Also known as the Earl of Torrington, and Baron Monck of Potheridge, Beauchamp And Teyes, Monck was an English soldier who served as Cromwell's military governor in Scotland and who later brought about the restoration of Charles II.
George Monck was forever preserved in English history with his res toration of Charles II.4 Already a great saint in the royalists' calendar, Monck had ten more years to live among them as the First Duke of Albemarle. After his years in camp as Cromwell's general in Scotland, his new life at Court did not come easily to the king-maker.
Biography. The career of ‘honest George Monck’ requires only a brief summary. His family had been established in Devon since the 12th century, but his father was the first to enter Parliament and then only in the hope of escaping from a debtors’ prison. With a younger son’s portion of £20 p.a. Monck became a professional soldier.
