George Henry Lewes (/ ˈ l uː ɪ s / ; 18 April 1817 – 30 November 1878) was an English philosopher and critic of literature and theatre. He was also an amateur physiologist. American feminist Margaret Fuller called Lewes a "witty, French, flippant sort of man".

George Henry Lewes was a philosopher and critic of literature and theatre. He was also an amateur physiologist. He met Eliot in 1851. They found they had many shared interests and fell in love. He was married and not able to get a divorce for legal reasons. In 1854 they took the difficult decision to live together.
George Henry Lewes was determined to make a lasting contribution to science. Long before he knew George Eliot, Lewes was developing his theories about the philosophical and physiological links between mind and body. Eliot’s support of Lewes’s scientific ambitions appears to have been a key reason the two became close.
