Tweeddale war der zweitgeborene Sohn des George Hay, 8. Marquess of Tweeddale. Als Sohn eines Marquess führte er seit Geburt die Höflichkeitsanrede Lord Arthur Hay. Seit sein älter Bruder George Hay, Earl of Gifford 1862 kinderlos gestorben war, führte er als neuer Heir apparent seines Vaters den Höflichkeitstitel Viscount Walden.

Arthur Hay Tweeddale. Coronel Arthur Hay, 9.º Marqués de Tweeddale (9 de noviembre de 1824 – 29 de diciembre de 1878), conocido antes de 1862 como Lord Arthur Hay y entre 1862 y 1876 como Vizconde Walden, fue un militar y ornitólogo escocés.
