  6. Gérard de Nerval is the pen name of French Romantic poet and author Gérard Labrunie, who was born in Paris. He was the son of an army doctor and was raised by his great-uncle in the Mortefontaine countryside while his parents traveled to the front.

  7. On a morning in January 1855, de Nerval was found dangling beneath the splintery grate of a rooming house, having hanged himself with bondage wire snatched from an adjoining brothel. He left a note which read: ‘Do not wait up for me this evening, for the night will be black and white’.
