Francis Talbot was a captain in the royalist armies during the English Civil War and fought at the Battle of Worcester in 1651. Following the royalist defeat there he fled abroad to Europe but returned to England before February 1654, the month he succeeded to his father's earldom, when he petitioned the Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell , to pardon him for all offences against Parliament.

Francis Talbot Drake was born on 5 October 1898, in New Zealand as the son of Frank Drake and Edith Minnie Talbot. He married Eileen Agnes O'Sullivan in 1926, in New Zealand. He died in 1979, in his hometown, at the age of 81. More.

Richard Francis Talbot succeeded to the title of earl, subject to the attainders, on the death of his grandfather, William Talbot (c.1643–1724) of Haggardstown, MP (1689) for Co. Louth. Having joined Nugent's (FitzJames's) regiment of Irish horse (1721), he was promoted captain (1729) and served in the war of Polish succession under Marshal Berwick (qv).
