Elődje a Puskás Ferenc Stadion (2002-ig Népstadion) volt, amelynél a labdarúgópályán milliméterre pontosan ugyanott volt a kezdőkör kialakítva, ahol az új játéktérnek a kezdőköre. Az 1950-es évek elején épült Népstadion betonszerkezetét elbontották és ledarálták, a régi betonkatlan anyagát pedig beépítették az új stadion falaiba. [9]
