14 de mai. de 2024 · Neither Scandinavian nor international scholars have been forthcoming in acknowledging the significance of a ‘threshold principle’—a term coined by Eric Hobsbawm to reflect the ideas that the survival of nations was determined by their size in demographic, economic, cultural and military terms—to contemporary national thought.

In a Scandinavian context, this is clearly wrong. Scandinavianists were obsessed by size. This was true of both cultural and political Scandinavianists.

A ‘we’, however, requires a ‘them’ and as persuasively shown amongst other by Eric Hobsbawm and Steven Mock, there is no better way to unite a nation that by pitting it against another nation.
