Portrait by O.A. Bullard. Emily Norcross Dickinson was born in Monson, Massachusetts, on July 3, 1804, to Betsy Fay and Joel Norcross. The eldest daughter of nine children, Emily Norcross had an extraordinary education for a young woman in the early nineteenth century.
By 1858, when she solicited a visit from her cousin Louise Norcross, Dickinson reminded Norcross that she was “one of the ones from whom I do not run away.” Much, and in all likelihood too much, has been made of Dickinson’s decision to restrict her visits with other people.

Emily Norcross Dickinson (1804-1882) of Monson, Massachusetts, was the eldest of nine children. She had an extraordinary education for a young woman in the early 19th-century, attending the co-educational Monson Academy, (of which her father was a founder), and a year of boarding school in New Haven, Connecticut, before her courtship with Edward Dickinson began.
