Elizabeth Blount, also known as Bessie, was a member of the English gentry and has the distinction of being one of the known and documented mistresses of King Henry VIII. She also was the mother of the king’s son, the only illegitimate child that Henry recognized as his own. Elizabeth was born c. 1500.

Bessie's grandmother, through her mother, had been Isabel Stanley, daughter of Sir John Stanley, a distant relative of Lord Thomas Stanley whom had married Margaret Beaufort, Henry VII's mother.

Born around 1498 in the sleepy county of Shropshire, her father sir John Blount was very cozy with King Henry VIII, and even accompanied him on campaign in France.
Elizabeth (Bessie) Blount, the second daughter of John Blount (1484–1531) and his wife, Katherine Peshall Blount (1483–1540), was born in about 1500. The couple had married at an early age, her mother was only ten at the time. In 1501, Prince Arthur and Catherine of Aragon set up their own court in Ludlow.
