The Historic Black Castle, in an prime location on Liberty Square, Thurles, County Tipperary, dates from the 16th Century and was home to Lady Thurles ( Elizabeth Poyntz) in the 1660s and 1670s. She had been married to Thomas Butler of the house of Ormonde. She died in 1673 and is buried in the Ladyes Chapple in St Mary’s, Thurles.
