Eleanor de Clare, suo jure 6th Lady of Glamorgan (3 October 1292 – 30 June 1337) was a powerful Anglo-Welsh noblewoman who married Hugh Despenser the Younger and was a granddaughter of Edward I of England.[2][3] She was born in 1292 at Caerphilly in Glamorgan, Wales.
3 de ago. de 2018 · Eleanor’s story is a complicated and cruel one – she escaped only by signing over most of her de Clare inheritance to the Crown. It was only when Edward III took control of his throne that Eleanor was able to regain her lands (she’s going to get a longer post another day.)
Despenser the Younger rose to become Chamberlain and a close advisor to King Edward II, much as Despenser the Elder had been. Despenser the Younger claimed the Lordship of Glamorgan in 1317 [5] through his wife Eleanor de Clare. He then accumulated more lands in the Welsh Marches and in England.

The son of Gilbert Fitz Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Pembroke, was Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke (died 1176), known as Strongbow, a leader of the Norman invasion of Ireland. His only son died while still a minor, and Strongbow's many Irish and Welsh possessions passed with his daughter Isabel, to her husband, William Marshal. [10]
