    Eileen Maud Blair (née O'Shaughnessy, 25 September 1905 – 29 March 1945) was the first wife of George Orwell (Eric Arthur Blair). During World War II, she worked for the Censorship Department of the Ministry of Information in London and the Ministry of Food. She was born in South Shields in the northeast of England.

  2. Eileen O'Shaughnessy married George Orwell in 1936 and became Eileen Blair, his real name. She was a woman who won a scholarship to Oxford, published a dystopian poem, asked for "obey" to be removed from her wedding vows, and supported him in his writing. She died in 1950, after years of ill-health and a hysterectomy. She was also a remarkable person who was forgotten by Orwell and by history.
