  2. Edward George Geoffrey Smith Stanley was born on March 29, 1799, in Knowsley Park, Lancashire, England. He attended Eton College from 1811 to 1817 before entering Christ Church, Oxford. In 1820 Stanley took a seat in Parliament as a Whig and became chief secretary for Ireland under Prime Minister Charles Grey in 1830, joining the Cabinet in 1831.
