    Há 5 dias · In May 1334 David and his wife Joan were forced to flee to France in the face of Edward Balliol’s English backed campaigns within Scotland. David was maintained by Philippe VI at Château Gaillard in Normandy for seven years before returning to Scotland in June 1341.

Balliol allied with France in 1295; Edward invaded Scotland the following year, deposing and exiling Balliol. Edward was less successful in Gascony, which was overrun by the French.

His father, the seventh Robert de Bruce (died 1304), resigned the title of earl of Carrick in his favour in 1292, but little else is known of his career until 1306.
