He is also known for his 1959 solution to the problem of the shortest path between two nodes of a network.
Edsger Wybe Dijkstra (1930–2002) was one of the most influential researchers in the history of computer science, making fundamental contributions to both the theory and practice of computing. Early in his career, he proposed the single-source shortest path algorithm, now commonly referred to as Dijkstra’s algorithm.

Leben. Edsger Dijkstra wurde als Sohn eines Chemikers und einer Mathematikerin geboren. Nach dem Besuch des Gymnasiums Erasmianum in Rotterdam studierte er ab 1948 Mathematik und theoretische Physik an der Universität Leiden. 1951 erreichte er den Bachelor-Grad und besuchte im Anschluss einen Programmierkurs bei Maurice V. Wilkes an der University of Cambridge.
