Douglas Bader. Group Captain Sir Douglas Robert Steuart Bader, CBE, DSO & Bar, DFC & Bar, DL, FRAeS ( / ˈbɑːdər /; 21 February 1910 – 5 September 1982) was a Royal Air Force flying ace during the Second World War. He was credited with 22 aerial victories, four shared victories, six probables, one shared probable and 11 enemy aircraft damaged.

In reality, Bader was a brash, foul-mouthed, staunchly conservative, outspoken man whose opinions on everything from Rhodesian independence to the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament would now be seen as downright offensive. Not that Douglas Bader would have cared one jot about that. Bader took his final flight on the 4th of June 1979.

I was lucky enough to have Paul Brickhill’s book ‘Reach for the Sky’ as a form prize in 1958. Its now has the various newspaper clips of obits in for some of these chaps.

Douglas Robert Steuart Bader was born on Monday, February 21, 1910, in the fashionable St. John’s Wood district of London. He was the second son of Frederick R. Bader, a heavy-set civil engineer on furlough from India, and his tall, black-haired wife, Jessie.
