As well as gaining flying skills helicopter pupils also take survival and leadership courses. All helicopter training is carried out at the Defence Helicopter Flying School, RAF Shawbury, which provides instruction for pupils from all three Services using the the Bell Griffin HT1 and Eurocopter Squirrel HT1.
17 de mai. de 2019 · 17 May 2019. The first eight rear crew graduated from the Defence Helicopter Flying School (DHFS) at RAF Shawbury at a special parade. This graduation marks another important milestone within the rotary element of UK Military Flying Training System (UKMFTS). The Graduates with the Reviewing Officer Air Vice-Marshal Warren James.
All the Defence Helicopter Flying School Helicopters and Synthetic Training Equipment are owned by FB Heliservices, a consortium of Bristow Helicopters and FR Aviation, who provide 40 % of the instructional staff, all the ground school and simulator staff, carry out all maintenance and provide support services.

No. 2 Flying Training School was disbanded in March 1997 so that in April 1997 the station could start providing training of helicopter pilots for all three of the UK's armed services, under the newly formed Defence Helicopter Flying School.

During his career, he has flown as part of the Chinook Force and also, the Search and Rescue Force flying the Sea King. His most recent posting was at Number 1 Flying Training School as a Qualified Helicopter Crewman Instructor (QHCI) on Sixty Squadron.
