Constantijn Huygens was een uitzonderlijk getalenteerd dichter. Dat zijn poëzie moeilijk en tijdloos tegelijk is, komt vooral door het complexe en vindingrijke taalgebruik. Eén van zijn specialiteiten was het spelen met woorden, bijvoorbeeld met zijn eigen voornaam.
