El College of Arms o Heralds' College (literalmente Colegio de Armas o Colegio de los Heraldos) es una corporación real formada por oficiales de armas profesionales, que constituye la máxima autoridad heráldica en Inglaterra, Gales, Irlanda del Norte y algunos reinos de la Mancomunidad.
Archive Department. The Librarian of the College of Arms, currently Mark Scott, Somerset Herald, oversees the Archive Department. This department, headed by the Archivist Dr James Lloyd, is responsible for the preservation, ordering, and cataloguing of the archive and library, and the accession of new acquisitions.
Any person wishing to have arms identified should first either bring to the officer in waiting at the College the object on which they appear, or send an illustration, preferably a photograph. It will then be possible to quote a fee for trying to identify the arms.
The College of Arms is a corporate body regulating heraldic matters and granting new armorial bearings for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The heralds are a part of The Queen's Household, and have royal duties such as publicly reading royal proclamations at the succession of a new Sovereign.
The College of Arms does not need to approve the use of the arms in each generation: the original grant of arms is the only authority required. Although daughters and sons inherit the right to bear arms for themselves personally, the right passes only through the male line: hence, a son transmits the arms to his children, but a daughter, can use them herself, but her children cannot.
The design of the Union flag is defined by the Proclamation Declaring His Majesty's Pleasure concerning the Royal Style and Titles appertaining to the Imperial Crown of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and its Dependencies, and also the Ensigns, Armorial Flags, and Banners thereof, which was dated 1 January 1801.
