7 de jun. de 2023 · Charles Remond Douglass, a Civil War veteran and civil servant, founded a private beach resort in Maryland in 1893 to escape the Jim Crow laws that discriminated against Black people. He and his second wife, Laura, purchased 40 acres of land from a Black family and sold it to friends and family for $5,000. The resort, called Highland Beach, became a refuge for some of Washington's prominent Black elite, such as poet Langston Hughes and suffragist Mary Church Terrell.
