Son of the mathematician Ada Lovelace and nobleman William King, Byron was shipped off to the Royal Navy in the 1850s. However, he later deserted his post and came back to London. Lady Byron's barony passed to her grandson Byron King-Noel, Viscount Ockham. In her will she left a £300 legacy to the writer George MacDonald, whom she had patronized during her life. Lady Byron Lane, off Knowle Road, Solihull, is named after her. Lady Byron was heiress of the Knowle estates through her father, Sir Ralph Milbanke Noel.

In 1835, Lord King (as he then was) married as his first wife Ada Byron, the only daughter of the poet Lord Byron and his wife Anne Isabella Milbanke. He was created Viscount Ockham and Earl of Lovelace in 1838, and appointed Lord Lieutenant of Surrey in 1840, a post he held until his death. [3]
