After the passing of the Government of Ireland Act , 1920, it became the seat of the government of Northern Ireland.

Also in County Down is Strangford Lough, actually an inlet partially separating the Ards peninsula from the mainland. Further south, Carlingford Lough is situated between Down and County Louth.
