25 de abr. de 2024 · Basil Rathbone was a British character actor whose portrayal of Sherlock Holmes highlighted a long and varied stage and screen career. Upon graduating from Repton school in England in 1910, Rathbone made his stage debut in Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew in 1911.

His swordsmanship is on display in a number of classic movies — ranging from “Captain Blood” to “The Mark of Zorro.” Rathbone was considered the best fencer in Hollywood. In fact, he was a two-time British Army fencing Champ.
23 de abr. de 2024 · Basil Rathbone played Holmes fourteen times, though (from what I’ve read) only the first two were big (ish) budget movies which attempted to the faithful to the Conan Doyle stories. The first, and by some accounts, the greatest, of the Basil Rathbone Holmes movies was The Hound of the Baskervilles. So I bought a copy and watched it.

Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes is much more empathetic, reasonable, and socially adept than the character in Arthur Conan Doyle's stories. And Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson is a bumbling clown, whereas in the stories the good doctor was quite intelligent and resourceful in his own way, as well as brave and good with a gun when necessary.
