Admiral Augustus Keppel, 1st Viscount Keppel, PC (25 April 1725 – 2 October 1786) was a British Royal Navy officer and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1755 to 1782. He saw action in command of various ships, including the fourth-rate Maidstone, during the War of the Austrian Succession.

Although Keppel was discharged from his command in 1779, he became first lord of the Admiralty and was created a viscount and a baron in 1782.

Hon. Augustus Keppel 1st Viscount. 1725-86. He was born on 25 April 1725, the second son of the Whig aristocrat and diplomat Willem Anne Van Keppel, the 2nd Earl of Albemarle, and of his wife Lady Anne Lennox, the daughter of the 1st Earl Richmond, who in turn was the illegitimate son of King Charles II and his mistress the Duchess of Portsmouth.

Augustus Keppel, who became an admiral, was the second son of William Anne Keppel, second earl of Albemarle. He was born on 25 April 1725.
Keppel, a Whig, was tried by court-martial, at which Palliser, a Tory, conducted the prosecution. When Keppel was acquitted he became the hero of the hour but the whole affair was politically charged. Keppel retired from active service, entered Parliament as MP for Surrey, and became a Viscount in 1782.
